Each legionnaire carried a short sword called a gladius was their main weapon. They would also have a pilum now known as a javelin, they would wear a helmet, have a shield and a pack of some sort with supplies.

The gladius, also known as the “hispanic sword”, was adapted from the blades used by tribal warriors that lived on the iberian peninsula. The second punic war is when it was first started to be used by the Romans, because Scipio Africanus found one and began incorporating into his military strategies. A type of gladius called the “Pompeii gladius” was the best known kind and was 40-60in long, which is short for a sword, so it was a very effective short range weapon. It was mainly used for stabbing and slashing.

The shields they used were called "Scutum". These were large curved shields adapted from the Italic peoples, whom the Romans fought against. The Scutum was made from gluing layers of wood together and was then covered in leather. This made it light, so they could hold it in one hand. Metal was added to the outer rim of the shield, and in the center. There would be a metal hole, so it could also be used as a punching weapon.
